Outspoken MP Greg Mulholland has called for the leaders of the country's pubcos to step down to help the trade reform.

The anti-pubco MP said bosses had lost their moral authority and should quit.

He said: "After years of aggressive denial and breathtaking spin, now followed by humiliating backtracking, we now have the bizarre spectacle of the pubcos bosses finally admitting that reform is needed and suggesting they will lead this process.

"It is clear to all that reform is needed, but it has to be real, not just window dressing and it is simply impossible for certain industry figures to lead this process.

Mulholland branded Enterprise Inns plans to fund a licensees group as "a sick joke"

He said: "Licensees are finally being heard and it is time there was a strong, independent, licensee's voice in the trade but it is simply absurd and rather sinister to suggest this should be pubco funded".

"It is time for new leadership in the pub trade and the shareholders of Britain's pub companies must realise that and ask the people who have led them into debt and discredit to stand down."
