Proud of Pubs took centre stage at the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group Dinner in Westminster last night.

The event, in the middle of Proud of Pubs Week, saw Nigel and Sue Anstead of the White Horse in Bedford named as winners of the Proud of Pubs Award - as the pub which best embodies the spirit of the campaign - in front of an audience of MPs and pub industry chiefs.

The Charles Wells lease has already raised more than £10,000 for local charities this year. "We're delighted to receive the award and we're proud to be a community pub," said Nigel.

"To do what we do at the centre of our community is down to the quality of our customers and our fantastic staff."

The event, hosted by John Grogan MP, also saw Roger Ryman of St Austell Brewery named Brewer of the Year, and David and Robert Ainsworth named Beer Drinkers of the Year.

Other Proud of Pubs Week events this week have seen pubs around the country laying on entertainment and raising money for charity, while MPs attended the launch of the week in parliament on Monday and are visiting pubs in their constituencies tomorrow.
