The editor of the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs guide 2010 says food "could be the saviour of the pub industry".

Derek Bulmer said: "Judging by the number of new entries we have found for this year's guide it would seem that reports of the death of the British pub have been grossly exaggerated. Establishments that have adapted to the changing habits of their customers by offering good quality, value for money food are thriving. In fact, I would go as far as to say that food could be the saviour of our pub industry - especially in rural areas."

The 2010 edition of the guide includes 573 of the best pubs serving good food in the UK and Ireland, 10 more than last year and of these, 83 are new additions.

The guide, now in its sixth year, also features 118 inspectors favourites, which are awarded not just because of the standard of cooking, but for an amazing location or warm welcome. The guide has a new red cover, to bring the guide more in line with other Michelin food-related guides,

The Masons Arms in Knowstone, Devon, is Pub of the Year 2010 in the new guide. The freehold is owned by Mark and Sarah Dodson. Mark Dodson's CV includes 12 years as head chef at Michel Roux's three Michelin-starred Waterside Inn, Bray-on-Thames.

Dodson's cooking leans towards the classics, and he creates sophisticated French and British dishes with an modern edge. Produce is sourced from local farmers and growers, with the emphasis firmly on quality, and dishes are attractively presented and deliciously fresh with precise, balanced flavours that show a real understanding of ingredients. Mark achieved a Michelin star at the pub in 2006, a year after taking it over.

The guide is out now and costs £14.99.
