Mulholland: criticises BBPA code
Outspoken MP Greg Mulholland has criticised BBPA's for failing to take "a more neutral stance" between pubcos and licensees.

Outspoken MP Greg Mulholland has criticised the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) for failing to take "a more neutral stance" between pubcos and licensees.

The BBPA's framework code of practice was published yesterday, after the Business and Enterprise committee's report last May criticising aspects of the relationship between the pubcos and their tenants.

The code aims to provide greater transparency in the relationship between pubcos and tenants.

Mulholland, who is chairman of the Save the Pub Group, blasted the code's failure to criticise the pubcos.

"The pub tie is both unfair and unsustainable and sadly the new code of practice fails to readdress the imbalance between Pubcos and licensees," said Mulholland.

"BBPA are increasingly labelled as the voice of the big pubcos and breweries, this new code was a real chance for them to take a more neutral stance when dealing with pubcos and licensees.

"I still remain hopeful that ministers will push for action and refer the pub tie model to the Competition Commission."
