Alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware has appointed a national advisory panel of medical experts to help advise consumers about alcohol misuse.

Six professionals, specialising in areas including the liver, mental health and oral cancer will support the charity for at least a year under Drinkaware's chief medical adviser, professor Paul Wallace.

The new panel members will offer consumers medically-sound information in their respective fields.

The team will include consultant psychiatrist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and lecturer Dr Jonathan Chick and consultant and directorate of adolescent medicine at University College London Hospitals and Great Ormond Street Hospital Dr Russell Viner.

"The appointment of the medical advisory panel will help Drinkaware to be at the forefront of medical advice relating to alcohol and will ensure that the charity continues to be a trusted source for consumers seeking the facts about alcohol and how it affects their health," said chief executive of Drinkaware Chris Sorek.

The charity believes that education is essential in raising awareness of alcohol-related illness.
