Staff left stranded and unable to work because of the travel chaos caused by volcanic ash should not be docked wages.
Employment lawyer David Malamatenios of Colman Coyle solicitors in London has warned licensees to tread carefully if they are thinking of not paying absent staff.
He told The Publican: "As far as stopping salary is concerned that is dependent on the contract. Unless there is a specific clause place there is no right to make the deduction.
"However what an employer can do is take absence from holiday leave or give them unpaid leave on those days."
According to travel industry body ABTA up to 150,000 UK workers were left stranded due to air travel cancellations caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
