An irate licensee berated government minister Ed Miliband during the Labour campaign tour yesterday, complaining he was about to go bankrupt under Gordon Brown's "regime".

John Doyle, an Enterprise Inns tenant at the Queensfield, Swindon, launched a sustained verbal attack on the climate change secretary, while he and Gordon Brown were visiting the town.

Doyle told Miliband: "I'd like to speak to Gordon Brown. I've been working my arse off under his regime and under Tony Blair's government and I'm about to go bankrupt for the second time around."

He said the town was "falling apart" under Labour.

But the Prime Minister reportedly invited the licensee to have a chat and offered him help with his rates bill.

According to the BBC, Brown blamed Swindon's Tory council for not telling him what help there was for small firms.

Doyle, it was reported, was happy with the meeting and said he would consider voting Labour, after previously indicating he would go with the Lib Dems.

He told The Publican today that as well as his business rates, the price he had to pay for beer was a "problem".

"Our relationship with Enterprise is quite good, but they only give us so much help, they don't give us a lot," he added.

A meeting has also been arranged between the licensee and local Labour MP Anne Snelgrove.
