The winners of the BII Licensee of the Year title have been announced with Richard and Loren Pope of the Bull's Head at Repton, Derbyshire, scooping the award.

They received the prize at the BII's annual lunch at the Grosvenor House hotel today.

Meanwhile, pubco Enterprise Inns picked up the Supreme Award in the BII's training awards programme - the NITAs.

Speaking at the event, attended by more than 1,000 people, BII chief executive Neil Robertson stressed the importance of the industry raising its standards.

He also called for the industry to unite and to engage more closely with local authorities.

Guests were also given details of the BII's plans to offer training courses in China - as exclusively revealed by The Publican ​- and run apprenticeship schemes.

Financially, the BII returned a "small surplus" in 2009, the group said its AGM - held prior to the annual lunch.

Peter Thomas, the BII's treasurer, said: "The 2009 results mean that we have a good foundation from which to grow and diversify the organisation to ensure a healthy future."
