Anti-beer tie campaigners Fair Pint are to lobby the new Government to make pubco critic Greg Mulholland MP the new pubs minister.

The group is preparing to ask the new Government for the Liberal Democrat MP to take the role previously occupied by John Healey, the Morning Advertiser has learnt.

Press rumours today suggest that Mulholland, who chaired the All-Party Save the Pub Group in the last Parliament, is being lined up as pensions minister for the new coalition Government.

However, he Tweeted today: "All these rumours of me being pensions minister are a little premature! No appointments have been made at this stage apart from Cabinet."

Fair Pint spokesman Steve Corbett said: "Given Greg's expertise in this area [the pub industry], we hope he will be appointed the next pubs minister."

Justice For Licensees supported the call.

"it is important that this trade continues to be represented by a pubs minister," said founder Inez Ward.

"We are of the opinion that Greg Mulholland would be the perfect candidate. He understands the trade and the issues affecting the trade and, most importantly, he is fully aware of the importance of the pub to communities, tourism, the economy and all other trades that rely on the Great British Pub."
