Managed pub company the Orchid Group has recognised its first eight Heroes of Hospitality in its inaugural Halo Awards ceremony.

Orchid's 7,000 employees had the chance to nominate a worker from one the companies 300 pubs for an award.

Judges chose nominees who continually went above and beyond to rise above customer expectations.

Among the winners were Wendy Lofkin of the Peacock in Nantwich, Cheshire, who scooped the Hero of Hospitality award for her 'positive, welcoming attitude and great customer knowledge'.

The Manager of the Year award went to Rob Dunn at the Barnbow in Leeds who transformed the pub from a £6k a week wet-led pub to a £16k a week dining pub central to the local community.

Paul Cutsforth, Orchid operations director said: "We were truly overwhelmed by the number of nominations and it was a real pleasure to read about all the amazing things our employees do each and every day, without being prompted."

The event was held at Pacific Oriental in London on January 18.
