Former president of the Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations (FLVA) Jim Suggett has died after a long illness in his late 60s.

He ran pubs in the north east of England for many years starting out as a Scottish & Newcastle tenant at the Green Tree in Middlesbrough.

Later he switched to the free trade after buying Annie's Bar in Middlesbrough which he ran successfully for several years.

Former FLVA chief executive Tony Payne said Suggett helped lay the foundations for the FLVA when it was formed following the demise of the National Licensed Victuallers Association in the early 1990s.

"He was the association's third president and helped guide the movement during its early days. His contribution to FLVA was considerable," Payne said.

He leaves a wife Madge.

The funeral is to take place on Wednesday 8 June at the St Bede's Chapel of Teeside Crematorium at 1.30pm.
