The BII has appointed Tim Burrows as director of training and education to develop new qualifications and drive BII’s commercial development.

Burrows joins BII from Kaplan Financial, one of the UK’s leading providers of accountancy and financial training, where he was head of Kaplan Professional Awards (KPA) and Institutional Relationships.

He will join the management team at BII with his role incorporating the trade body’s training arm, the BIIAB.

According to BII, former director of BIIAB Cathie Smith has decided not to return to work and is leaving the organisation after a period of illness.

Earlier this year the organisation came under criticism as news broken by the Publican's Morning Advertiser revealed that it has run up a deficit of over £400,000. A joint venture to provide training and accrediation to Chinese interns had lead to £124,000 being written off.

BII’s chief executive Peter Thomas, who wasa recruited to provide a period of commercial leadership for the organisation, said: “Tim’s appointment demonstrates BII’s significant and new investment into qualifications and the work we are doing with apprenticeships. We have a strategic plan to develop new qualifications and Tim’s expertise and experience from the private sector, particularly in new product development, will be central to this.

"My vision for BII is to create a successful and financially viable organisation, and I firmly believe that revolutionising our training and qualifications will provide long-term assurances of commercial success.”
