MA300: Investment in staff is key, says North Bar
NorthBar revealed the secret to the company’s success was its investment in staff members at last week's MA300 conference.

NorthBar director Christian Townsley told delegates about his passion for opening “really good bars” run by “friendly, knowledgable and attentive staff”.

Townsley, who co-founded the company with John Gyngell, said: “We want to keep pushing boundaries. While we maintain our business focus, each of our venues will have an individual theme.

"One of our strengths as directors is that we’ve been where our staff have been. We have operated on the coalface."

"We send staff to brew monthly, we involve them in the business and welcome their ideas,” said Townsley. “Management also has complete access to all information, accounts, everything,” he added, stressing the importance of having staff who take an interest in making the business successful.

"Staff ask us a lot of questions. Answering questions, for us, truly matters."

Townsley and Gyngell opened North Bar in 1997 with the sole mission to “open somewhere decent to drink.”

The pair now own six venues in the Leeds area:  North Bar, The Cross Keys, Further North, Alfred, Preston and  Otley.
