A raspberry sorbet has beaten off competition from around 10,000 other food products to win top prize at this year’s Great Taste awards.

Raspberry Sorbetto, made by London-based Snowflake Luxury Gelato, was declared the Great Taste Supreme Champion 2014 at the Great Taste Golden Forks Dinner, held on Monday (8 September).

The sorbet had been blind-tasted and judged as one of the Top 50 Foods by a number of expert food judges, including the head of food at Harrods – sponsor of the award – and buyers from food stores in London and throughout the UK.

The sorbet, which is fat-free, dairy-free, gluten free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans, was described by Karen Barnes, editor of delicious magazine and one of the Great Taste judges, as having “the flavour of the fruit, the leaf, the entire bush”.

Handmade using artisan skills, Snowflake Luxury Gelato’s 'gelataio' (gelato chef) uses seasonal fruits to make sorbet and gelato daily.

London boutiques

The company owns two London gelato boutiques – in Westbourne Grove, Bayswater and Wardour Street, Soho – and has a concession at Harvey Nichols.

Run by the Guild of Fine Food, the Great Taste Awards are in its 20th year.

John Farrand, the Guild’s managing director, said: “As always, our judges had the task of finding the most exquisite food by blind tasting and conferring over each individual entry.”

Farrand added: “We know that the Great Taste logo is an established and trusted mark. For producers it reflects their hard work and commitment to making superb tasting food and drink.

“For consumers, it is a recognisable, simple and clear logo that confirms they are buying the most outstanding products on the shelf.”

This year, 153 products were given a three-star rating – the food equivalent to a chef winning a Michelin star, the Guild claimed.
