Spirit’s Flaming Grill and Fayre & Square concepts, plus Greene King’s Hungry Horse and Whitbread’s Brewer’s Fayre, all feature in the top 10 brands that are most likely to capture custom from “hard-pressed families”, according to new research by CGA Peach.

The research said that “hard-pressed families” account for 16% of the survey’s nationally representative sample, two-thirds of whom are female.

In the north-east and Wales, these less-affluent families account for almost one in four respondents. But they form only 12% of the sample in London and the south-east. It found more than 40% of “hard-pressed families” eat out at least weekly; 14% of them eat out at least three times a week. Around a third of them are not working, and yet despite their more limited means, their reported eating-out frequency is in fact higher than average. This could be largely a function of their age profile, with only one in four being over 45—and younger age groups eat-out more.

The data focuses just on parents with children up to age 16, with household incomes no higher than £30k per annum (including those stating they are on fixed incomes.

Posted by Tim Mars,

How come Wetherspoons is not on this list? If it had been included, what would its ranking be?
