Eight pub operators have made the shortlist for the Sustainable Restaurant Awards 2015.

Winners of the awards, which honour high achievers in sustainable foodservice and are organised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, will be announced by SRA president and Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc at a ceremony on Monday, 23 February at Oval Space in London.

Thwaites tenancy the Eagle & Child, in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, run by licensee Glen Duckett, has been nominated for the People’s Favourite Award for its efforts to get the young and unemployed into kitchen work, serving a selection of local dishes with a modern twist.

Duckett said: “We’re all elated – it demonstrates all the work we’ve put into sustainability and our work in the local community. Sustainability is important for everyone to consider, it’s an essential part of the business and for supporting the local economy.”

The Eagle & Child was named Pub of the Year 2014 in last year’s Thwaites Awards for Excellence, also coming top of the Best Pub Dining category.

Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropub Awards 2015 Highest New Entry and Newcomer of the Year award winner the Truscott Arms, in Maida Vale, London, is vying for the title of Sustainable Pub of the Year against Brakspear-owned Orwells in Binfield Heath, Oxfordshire and the Imperial, near Fulham, London.

Oakman Inns’ the Akeman, in Hertfordshire, is competing in the Most Improved Sustainability category.

Parched pubco site the Roebuck, in Borough, London has been named a contender for the Best Food Waste Strategy award for its zero tolerance policy on waste, which includes saving lemon pips for pectin and creating a potato skin dish.

Youngs-owned Geronimo Inns has been nominated for the SRA Award for Society. The pubco won the title of Sustainable Large Group of the Year in last year’s awards.

London based bar operator Drake & Morgan is also competing for the title of Sustainable Small Group of the Year.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite outlets until February 15 at www.thesra.org/vote or by tweeting the name of their choice along with #srafavevote.
