Liverpool City Council has announced it will seek to consult on a late night levy, more than a year after first suggesting the scheme.

The decision on whether to begin the consultation process will take place at a Licensing and Gambling Committee meeting that is currently scheduled for 8 September.

The proposed levy would apply to premises authorised to sell alcohol at any time between midnight and 6am. There would only be an exemption for New Year’s Eve.

The consultation is proposed to run from late September for eight weeks until late November 2015 with the report to go before the full council on the 13 January.

If approved the council would seek to implement the scheme by 1 June.

The authority first announced its intention to consult last July with an initial timeframe of October.
