TOP 50 GASTROPUBS 2016
3. The Pipe & Glass Inn, Beverly, East Yorkshire
James Mackenzie's Yorkshire free house the Pipe & Glass Inn is East Yorkshire's first Michelin-starred pub. But unlike many Michelin-starred restaurants where small portions reign supreme, Mackenzie's dishes are generous, utilising the finest Yorkshire produce. Mackenzie also brews "Two Chefs", a honey beer, with fellow Top 50 Gastropubs chef Andrew Pern of the Star Inn at Harome, North Yorkshire.
The Pipe & Glass Inn won Wine List of the Year in 2015 for its wide range of available bottles and specialist wine dinners. The pub also offers an own label house wine, produced by Moulin De Gassac. Mackenzie is somewhat of a celebrity chef in Yorkshire these days and is currently judging the Golden Apron competition, aimed at seeking out the county's top young talented chefs.
Sample dishes: Roast breast of guinea fowl with a crispy parcel of leg meat, devils on horseback, sautéed heritage potato, burnt onion purée, kale and sherry cream, "Gloucester Old Spot" potted pork with sticky apple and crackling salad, Harrogate blue cheese croquettes with cauliflower champ, Romanesca, baby leeks, hazelnuts, milk and hyssop.
