A charcuterie and meat snack company claims to have invented a cured meat snack that stops hangovers before they kick in.

Peckham-based manufacturer Serious Pig said its new product, Snackingham Chilli & Ginger, contained ingredients that would help ease a hangover’s symptoms.

George Rice, of Serious Pig, said: “There are tons of supposed hangover cures out there but we’ve never found one that actually works – what we’ve produced is something a little different.

“It’s more prevention than anything else, in that you can actually enjoy whilst you’re having a beer or glass of wine.”

Recent research by charity Drinkaware reported that more than half of Brits planned to drink more in December than any other time of year.

“Nibbling on high quality meat protein at the same time as drinking is a really good idea as its rich in the amino acids you need to make neurotransmitters,” added author and nutritionist Angela Dowden.

“Ginger is also a well-known traditional remedy to prevent nausea, whilst chilli is thought to boost levels of feel good endorphins as well as improving circulation, so the body’s detoxification process can work optimally.”

However according to NHS Choices, outright hangover cures are generally myths.

The health service’s website reads: “There are tips for avoiding hangovers and for easing the symptoms if you have one. The best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink – if you decide to drink, do it sensibly and within the recommended limits.”
