Born in Delhi and brought up in Walsall, over the last 15 years Greene King’s chief executive Rooney Anand has established himself as one of the key figures in the UK pub industry.
Indeed, that status has been elevated further over the past 12 months by the acquisition and integration of Spirit Group, a bold move that has taken the brewer to an estate of more than 3,000 houses, managed, leased and tenanted.
Anand joined Greene King from a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) background in 2001 to head the beer division before taking the chief executive position in 2005.
His ambition that the group develops into “the UK’s leading pub company” can be seen not only in the Spirit takeover but in the creation of the semi-autonomous Metropolitan Pub Company, merging London acquisitions Realpubs and Capital Pub Company into a distinct modern urban offer, and in driving a portfolio of strong brands that can target every angle in the marketplace.
Ed Bedington, editor of the Publican’s Morning Advertiser, which organises the awards, said: “The acquisition of Spirit has propelled Greene King firmly into the spotlight along with the architect of that deal.
“Rooney has taken Greene King onto the national stage and his work to drive forward the evolution of his business makes him a worthy winner of the title Business Leader of the Year.”
