Pub closures
Calendar created to honour the "perished pubs of Redditch"
Kevin Beresford has this week released his collection of 2017 calendars, which includes the tragically titled Perished Pubs of Redditch.
Beresford says that he was inspired to create the calendar when his local pub, the White Lion in the Redditch suburb of Astwood Bank, closed down in 2015. "I could walk straight into it, but they closed it down and I thought I should say something or do something about it," he says.
"Because I do quirky calendars, I decided to do a calendar about the perished pubs of Redditch. I didn't know if I could get 12 pubs, but in the end there was more than 20 and I had to leave some out."
Beresford puts the decline of pubs in Redditch down to "a lot of things", including the smoking ban and cheaper supermarket alcohol. "I thought it would be quite a quirky calendar for nostalgic reasons and for posterity because these places are going. They're not being made into wine bars, they're mainly being converted into flats or they just stand derelict, which is even sadder," he adds.
A selection of the pubs and some accompanying information from Beresford can be viewed by clicking through the slideshow at the top of the page. Meanwhile, the calendars themselves are available here.
