NewRiver opens 11th pub with Co-op store
It is the 11th time a Co-op store has been built next to a NewRiver pub, part of an ongoing partnership between the two companies to deliver a total of 40 convenience stores.
The latest launch is “significant”, according to the pubco because it is the first simultaneous opening of both a pub and store.
David Shipton, asset development director for NewRiver’s pub portfolio, said the investment will help create a “revitalised community pub” for everyone.
'Perfect' use of surplus land
Shipton continued to state the Reindeer was a "perfect example" of NewRiver maximising its pub portfolio by using underutilised space or surplus land through “appropriate developments”, including convenience stores.
The pub, one of NewRiver’s 344 sites, now offers food and boasts a range of new features, including extensive interior and exterior refurbishment, a new-look bar, lounge and dining room, plus a snug and private dining area.
The Co-op store has created 20 jobs and is said to have a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.
More passing trade
Some NewRiver publicans are already seeing the benefits of having a convenience store situated alongside their pub, according to the pubco.
Kevin Ward, who runs the Ashmore Inn, Wolverhampton, said the Co-op adjacent to his pub has had a “brilliant impact” on trade.
“Business at the start of this year has been much better than in 2016,” he said.
“Previously, people used to visit the small shopping precinct across the road and didn’t see the pub but now that the Co-op is here, there’s more passing trade and more people notice us and come in for a drink.”
Community hub
Shipton added: “An important part of our commitment is the investment in the pub itself, in order to ensure it’s well-placed to benefit from the new neighbouring store.
“We believe that the store and the pub will work really well together as a new community hub."
The pubco has previously come under fire for demolishing two Dudley pubs to build Co-op convenience stores.
