Publicans across the country have shown strong support for a joint industry campaign to stop the use of plastic straws and stirrers in pubs.

#TheLastStraw campaign, launched this week up by three major industry bodies and The Morning Advertiser, has garnered huge support on social media with many pubs backing the call and reporting they no longer use the single-use plastic implements.

Publicans up and down the country have been posting, sending messages, and interacting over social media since the campaign was announced by the MA, the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), and the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) on Monday.

Some have been inspired by the campaign, and have vowed to find alternatives, while others have used it as an opportunity to share how they have already ditched the disposable plastic.

The campaign is a response to growing concerns that plastic waste is choking the world's oceans, which UN-Oceans has described as a "planetary crisis", along with polluting the environment and killing wildlife.

A number of pubcos have already taken action to reduce plastic straw waste including JD Wetherspoon, Be at One, Punch and Ei Group.

Here's nine tweets that demonstrate how publicans are sucking it up and abandoning the straw, and getting involved.
