Whitbread brand Brewers Fayre has been criticised on social media after its offer to give mums free meals on Mother’s Day stated it was for “two-parent families”.

The deal offers mums a free meal after 6pm on Mother’s Day (Sunday 11 March) but states in the terms and conditions that “the Mums Eat Free offer is open to all two-parent families of either mixed or same-sex, regardless of gender.”

One user, Kathryn Fox shared the offer on her Facebook page and said: “Not very impressed with this Mother’s Day offer from Brewers Fayre! So all us single moms (sic) doing it by ourselves don’t deserve a treat eh!

“On Mother’s Day of all days. So only two parent families eligible! Thanks for that! And to think I waste my hard-earned single moms (sic) cash on taking my kids here on a regular basis, when being accompanied by a deadbeat dad doesn’t bother them when they take my money!”

Claire Sargeant posted on the Brewers Fayre Facebook page and said: “Really think that this needs addressing ASAP.  ‘Offer applies to two-parent families’, what about the single mums out there, surely they deserve a treat…ESPECIALLY on Mother’s Day of all days?

“As a single mother myself, I find this infuriating and will not be surprised if this costs you many loyal customers. I’m in shock!!”

Discrimination

Another user also posted on the pub group’s Facebook page and used emojis to express her anger about the deal.

Caroline Slater said: “I have just received your ‘Mums eat free’ email and it has made me [angry emojis]. To qualify for this promotion you have to buy one adult main meal, which is fine as my children are all adults, but then I read the small print [angry emojis].

“You state this offer is open to ‘ALL TWO-PARENT FAMILIES…’ I am a single parent so under the small print I DO NOT qualify.

“Surely this is DISCRIMINATION???? Please advise (sic) me as to whether I qualify for a free meal or not (angry emojis).”

Paula Bowers said the offer being only available for two-parent families was “disgusting”. She said: “Slight bit of discrimination here for all those hard-working single mums, your (sic) not entitled to a free meal.

“Disgusting [that] your offer is only available for two-parent families.”

Missed the mark

A spokesperson for Brewers Fayre apologised for any confusion or offence caused as it was never the intention and said that it has amended the offer.

The spokesperson said: “Brewers Fayre is delighted to be openings its doors to thousands of mums and dads and families of all shapes and sizes this Mother’s Day.

“Our Mother’s Day offer was intended as a special treat to some of our most loyal customers and was based on any two adults – be they spouses, partners or friends – purchasing one main meal to receive a free mum’s meal.

“We realise this has missed the mark for some customers and we are so sorry for any confusion or offence caused, which was never our intention.

“We have listened to the feedback and are pleased to confirm we have amended the offer to our loyalty scheme members to honour a free meal to any mum dining with children this Mother’s Day on presentation of the email and voucher code.”
