More than 13,000 people were supported by the Licensed Trade Charity (LTC) in 2018 thanks to £1m-plus in grants.

Almost 13,500 staff from pubs, bars and breweries received record donations of £1.1m in 2018, from the LTC to help them in various ways.

Recipients of the grants struggled with clearing rent arrears, unpaid bills, home adaptations, educations grants and funeral grants.

The number of beneficiaries in 2018 rose by 45% on the previous year, with many of those gaining help from the charity using its 24/7 helpline, which is staffed by advisers.

Mental health and health

A website is also available and hosts advice as well as over 50 help sheets on subjects including mental health, money, housing, education and health.

Pubcos that made the record donations possible, through raising awareness of the charity’s support functions, included JD Wetherspoon, Ei Group, Stonegate and Fuller’s.

The LTC offers support similar to that given by the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), however, it provides this free of charge.

Caroline Davies, who is head of employee relations at pubco Mitchells & Butlers, said: “It is fantastic that we are able to offer our employees a free helpline that is provided by the Licensed Trade Charity to support them in a wide range of challenges that they may face in their daily lives.”

Replaced a fee-paying service

She continued: “This directly replaced a fee-paying EAP service but there are many other benefits to the LTC service, the most important being that they understand the work and lifestyle of our teams due to their experience working with people who have built careers in the licensed trade.”

Meanwhile, The Morning Advertiser celebrated its 225th anniversary this month, after being founded by the trade charity in 1794.

The history of the title and the LTC, as well as the colourful past of the pub trade, was covered in a special edition of The Morning Advertiser on 11 February.
