New brew: Truman's new east London home will increase its brewing output tenfold
Truman’s has revealed plans for a new brewery in Walthamstow, east London, that will drastically increase its brewing capacity.

Currently brewing at a 25,000 hectolitre (HL) site in Hackney Wick – the brewer’s £1m base of operation since 2013 – Truman’s new site will increase its production capacity to 250,000 HL.

Opening its doors in spring 2020, the new 50,000sq ft site, designed by award-winning London architect practice Barr Gazetas, will create more than 80 jobs for its local community and boast a brewery taproom, immersive visitor experience, brewery tours, a street food market and performance space for live music, including artist studios.

Moreover, the brewery’s new Walthamstow home will feature a pilot brewery for the creation of small-batch limited edition beer as well as a hands-on brew school experience where guests will be able to learn the art of brewing.

Perfect destination

Truman’s CEO James Morgan, who relaunched the brewery in 2010 after the 350-year-old institution was closed in 1980s following a merger, said: “Our new brewery will be a fitting home for London’s largest independent brewer.

“Having maxed-out capacity at our current home in Hackney Wick, it gives us a springboard to grow for many years to come while flying the flag for east London brewing.

“It’s exactly where we want to be. With the addition of the street food market and performance space, the venue is the perfect destination to enjoy great beer, food and music with friends and family.”

Vibrant community

Morgan continued: “We’re delighted to bring Truman’s to Walthamstow and join part of its vibrant and growing craft beer community.”

Truman’s reveal of its plans for a new brewery is the latest in a series of announcements by British brewers eyeing new facilities.

West Berkshire Brewery recently unveiled a rebranded portfolio and £9m investment in new facilities while Kent-based Curious Brewery opened its own multimillion-pound expansion – dubbed its ‘cathedral of brewing’ on 10 May.

Also, Welsh brewer and operator Tiny Rebel announced it will be moving part of the business into a new 60,000sq ft site to accommodate its growing team and equipment in April.
