There is still a week to go before entries to the Great British Pub Awards’ Young Chef of the Year category closes.

If you have a chef aged under 25 who is super-talented and shines bright, why not test their skills and give them the recognition they deserve by entering them for this coveted award.

Last year’s winner, Leon Jones from the Red Lion Inn, Penderyn, south Wales, impressed judges with his roasted cabbage with cod, cumin and a hot and tangy salsa.

The awards can be entered at www.greatbritishpubawards.co.uk.

Finalists for the award, which is sponsored by Booker and Makro, will compete in a one-day cook-off to showcase their skills in front of a panel of judges.

Chefs will compete against each other and be challenged to come up with a starter from a mystery box of ingredients, and the winning dish will be served at the Great British Pub Awards on 5 September.

Celebrated head chefs

Head judge and The Morning Advertiser managing editor Nicholas Robinson said: “We’ve celebrated head chefs with our Chef of the Year competition for several years now and launched the Young Chef of the Year award in 2018.

“It is a highly popular category and is a great platform for chefs to practise their competitive cooking skills, while also gaining valuable feedback from the leading pub chefs who form the panel on the day.”

Last year’s finalists were:

  • Scott Sutherland, Chadwicks Inn, Maltby, South Yorkshire
  • Daniel Holloway, the Horns, Reading, Berkshire
  • Stephen Ferrari, the Kentish Hare, Tunbridge Wells, Kent
  • Leon Jones, the Red Lion Inn, Penderyn, south Wales

Entries for the Chef of the Year, also sponsored by Booker and Makro, will remain open for until 29 May.
