JDW pub closed after mouse spotted

The Moon on the Square in Basildon shut its doors on Saturday 7 December after the rodent was spotted in the customer area, JDW has confirmed.

A spokesman for JDW said: “We can confirm there was a sighting of a single mouse in the customer area at the Moon on the Square on Saturday 7 December.

“Pest control was immediately called and the decision was made to close the pub until the problem was dealt with.”

Ongoing monitoring

He added: “The pub reopened at approximately 6pm on the same day. The pest control engineer confirmed the rodent had come in from outside (due to local building activity) and the point of entry to the building was identified and blocked, with ongoing monitoring now taking place.

“Council environmental health officers attended the pub on 10 December and were satisfied the problem had been resolved.”

Meanwhile, in October an old sewer line was blamed for a mouse being spotted in a West Sussex​ JDW pub.

JDW confirmed there was a rodent sighting at the Lynd Cross in Horsham and officers from the council’s environmental health department had spoken with the manager.

Problem cause

The pub group also said the site was on an old sewer line, which could have caused the problem.

JDW spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that a mouse was spotted at the pub and the council’s environmental health officers (EHO) have spoken with the manager.

“The EHO asked for a number of measures to be implemented and that is happening at present. The pub sits on the site of an old sewer line and we believe this is the cause of the problem.

“We are working with our pest control contractors to solve the issue.”
