Champions from the 2020 Publican Awards told The Morning Advertiser how much winning means to them and their businesses.

The glittering ceremony, which took place last week (Wednesday 4 March) at Evolution London, saw a variety of operator take to the stage to collect their awards, hosted by celebrity comedian Rob Beckett.

Fuller's CEO Simon Emeny was named Business Leader of the Year and said: “It is wonderful to be recognised in front of everybody that I have worked with for many years.

“This is the moment to come into the trade because the opportunities for anybody coming into this industry are enormous so this is a skilled job where you work hard and the rewards are great.”

Greene King took home the title of Best Sustainable Pub Company and communications director Greg Sage outlined the secrets to the company's success.

Thrilled to win

He said: “We have worked really hard over the past couple of years to improve our environmental footprint and drive lots recycling, reductions in waste and are thrilled with this award.”

Craft Union Pub Company was named Community Pub Operator and boss Frazer Grimbleby dedicated the win to its licensees.

He added: “This award means so much to us because since the creation of this company, we have done this for all our communities we serve.

“This is dedicated to each and every operator that does this for us and serves their community each and every day.

“We absolute dedicate this award to our operators.”

Very special

 St Austell president James Staughton OBE was awarded the title of Outstanding Industry Contribution and hailed it "a huge honour".

He added:“It’s a huge honour to have this award, it really is very, very special. It’s been a long and very exciting journey the brewery has travelled and I have been privileged to work with an amazing team of people.

“This is testimony to all their hard work and I’m just a very lucky and fortunate to be their leader over many years. It’s a very proud moment.

“It’s the tip of the industry, it’s the hallowed award that means so much to people. When you’ve worked all your life in an industry, it’s just wonderful to be recognise publicly within the peers of the industry I’m hugely flattered and very privileged, it’s a real joy, thank you.”
