Almost all (99%) customers said they felt safe visiting a pub while 98% felt comfortable about returning to one in the future, a new survey has found.

The poll of more than 25,000 people conducted by Greene King also revealed that 70% said visiting their local pub was a top priority, ahead of visiting family and friends (69%).

The brewer and pub operator, which started reopening sites on 6 July, aimed to understand customers’ views on returning to pubs and how they have found the experience.

The research also found almost nine in 10 (86%) respondents said the pub they visited still had the atmosphere they were hoping for, even with the safety measures in place.

Top priority

Some 97% of those surveyed agreed visiting pubs again made them feel like life was getting back to normal.

Karen Bosher, managing direct of the premium, urban and venture brands at Greene King said: “Pubs are a quintessential part of British culture and we were delighted to start welcoming customers back earlier this month.

“It goes without saying the health and safety of our teams and customers was our number one priority but we also wanted to ensure our pubs still felt like the friendly, sociable places they have always been.

“It’s fantastic to see people are still keen to visit their local pubs and even better, they feel safe doing so and enjoyed the experience.”

Safety measures

Greene King previously announced it was opening its pubs with its ‘Pub Safe’ promises in place – pledges designed to help look after team members and ensure customers can socialise safely.

The promises focus on hygiene and safety, while aiming to maintain the atmosphere of the pub. They are:

  • Safe socialising layout throughout the pubs
  • Looking after the team so they can look after customers
  • Minimising contact
  • Hand sanitising and hygiene
  • Pub Safe monitor

The layout will include clear signage to direct customers through the pub with tables spaced in line with Government guidelines and customers will be encouraged to pre-book a table instead of standing at the bar.

The bar service area will have Perspex screens and screening will be positioned between booths, where necessary.
