Greene King has made £2m in support loans available to its 6,500 independent free-trade pubs as part of its 'Bounce-Back' measures.

Loans of up to £10,000 will be made available to existing and new trade customers to help support them out of lockdown, whether a pub, club or other independent licensed venue.

In the last month, according to the pubco and brewer, 105 pub licensees have already benefited from Greene King's scheme.

Hundreds of Greene King's payment plans have also been adjusted in recent months, the terms of which it said were revised "favourably".

Safely reopen

In addition to the loan scheme, Greene King has offered free trade customers one-to-one advice on safely reopening, as well as helping operators to create business building marketing plans.

In house cellar service technicians have also been made available to assist with pubs reopening. The technicians will maintain all brands supplied by Greene King.

A dedicated customer telesales team is also operating to help licensees with drinks ordering, as well as coordinate distribution to suit business needs.

Greene King's brewing and brands sales director Paul Downing said: "Supporting our customers through reopening and the challenges ahead is an absolute priority to us.

"Pubs are the hubs of their communities and we will work hand in hand with licensees to help them navigate the months ahead."

He continued: "Our teams have been working hard to support free trade customers, not just financially but with practical solutions and advice to put them on the best footing as they begin to trade."

Open a quarter of pubs

Meanwhile, Greene King said it would open a quarter – 1,294 – of its managed pub estate on 6 July, which was two days after pubs were allowed to resume trade.

Its entire 1,700 estate of managed pubs would follow the company's newly created 'Pub Safe' strategy, which was developed to ensure team members' and customers' safety.

The strategy follows a handful of points, which are:

  • Safe socialising layout throughout the pubs
  • Looking after the team so they can look after customers
  • Minimising contact
  • Hand sanitising and hygiene
  • Pub Safe monitor
