Pub giant JD Wetherspoon (JDW) is slashing the prices of its dishes to lower than supermarket meal deal prices as a result of the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out Scheme.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the scheme to offer a discount to diners and encourage them to eat out of home during his Summer Statement on 8 July.

It can be used all day, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 August to 31 August 2020 to offer a 50% discount - up to a maximum of £10 per person - to diners for food and non-alcoholic drinks to eat or drink in. Alcoholic drinks and service charges are excluded from the offer.

There is no limited to the number of times customers can use the offer during this period, however customers cannot get a discount for someone who is not eating or drinking.

Taking the discount into account, JDW pubgoers will pay £2.24 for a breakfast, which includes a free-range egg, a rasher of back bacon, Lincolnshire sausage, hash brown, baked beans and a coffee (with free refill).

Price comparison

It also means diners at JDW will pay £2.75 for a margherita pizza with 398ml Pepsi Max alongside £2.37 for a deli deal, which includes a southern-fried chicken and smoky chipotle mayo wrap with chips and a Remedy Kombucha raspberry lemonade.

JDW compared the prices in Tesco (dated 29 July 2020), the supermarket offers an all-day breakfast ready meal and Kenco Duo Cappuccino instant coffee for £2.33.

It also stated a finest buffalo mozzarella and tomato pizza and 330ml can of Pepsi is £4.96 and £3 for a Tesco sandwich meal deal.

As a result of the Government scheme, a traditional breakfast in 747 JDW pubs will cost £1.75; a coffee or tea with a free refill in 821 pubs will cost 65p; a classic burger with soft drink in 671 pubs will cost £2.50.

Children’s meals, which consist of choices such as spaghetti Bolognese and five-bean chilli with each meal including a drink and banana or a fruit snack, in 792 pubs will cost £2.08.

Vast majority

JDW chairman Tim Martin said: “Thanks to the Government scheme, an individual is £2.93 better off eating and drinking at JDW than purchasing a similar range of products at Tesco.

“Over a 13-day period, customers would save £38.09. At Tesco, customers will appreciate, every little helps.

“Prices at some of our town and city centre pubs are higher and the comparison with Tesco does not work in these cases.

“However, the vast majority of our pubs will be offering a range of meals (with a drink) at unbeatable prices.”
