A former British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) licensee of the year award winner has confirmed the closure of Birmingham pub.

Licensee Keith Marsden, who won the BII award in 2015, will close the doors of Greene King site the Prince of Wales in Moseley, at the end of this month.

However, operator and brewer Greene King stated it intended to re-open the pub with a new partner.

Heart of the community

A spokesperson for Greene King said: “We intend to reopen the Prince of Wales as we truly believe it can be a successful pub at the heart of the community in Moseley.

“We want to partner with someone so we can help them to make this happen. Our search for a new partner has only just begun so anyone interested should get in touch to find out more.”

In 2016, Marsden lost a battle against developers Birmingham Properties Group regarding the construction of 46 luxury flats adjacent to the pub, which he described as “disappointing” at the time, as the pub relied heavily on pub garden trade.

End of an era

Speaking to the Morning Advertiser in 2016 Marsden said: “It shows a shocking disregard for the pub by the developer and the process. If you are in a pub that is a wet-led boozer and the big nights are Fridays and Saturdays, it will be put at risk by 46 luxury apartments on the boundary fence.”

Additionally, the pub announced on Facebook it would be hosting an “end of an era” party with live music and DJ’s, costing £10 per ticket including two cocktails and a burger, counting down to its closure.

The social media post said: “We are closing down. Come and help us celebrate the end of an era. 15 years at the Prince comes to an end with the bank holiday cocktail countdown party! See you there!”
