RedCat Pub Company has announced former Whitbread managing director Phil Birbeck will take over from Chris Hill as the company’s chief executive officer from today (Monday 3 October).

While the company stated Hill had left the business “with thanks”, RedCat, which has acquired more than 100 pubs and pub hotels since its inception in February 2021, stated it was “delighted” Birbeck had joined the brand.

RedCat executive chairman and founder Rooney Anand said: “I’m delighted to welcome Phil to RedCat.

Delivering results

“We have grown rapidly since launch last year, and Phil’s experience of building and leading strong teams, creating great customer experiences and delivering results will be important as we move into the next phase of the RedCat journey.

“I’m looking forward to us working closely together and welcome him to the team. Chris leaves with our sincere thanks and appreciation, having played a key role in helping me set up RedCat and establishing the retail team and operating division. We wish him and his family well for the future.”

Birbeck was previously Whitbread managing director of pubs division for more than five years but also brings with him in excess of 25 years’ experience at Dixons Carphone Group, the last seven of which were spent in senior leadership positions, to RedCat.

Furthermore, Birbeck has also worked in senior roles at Currys PC World with his experiences spanning several businesses across the hospitality and retail sectors in France, Spain, and the UK.

Strong start

This comes as the investment vehicle recently acquired Britain’s “most famous inn” with Redcat having purchased the iconic Jamaica Inn, Launceston, Cornwall, in August this year following the attainment of two sites from Berkley Inns in July.

Birbeck said: “I’m excited to be joining RedCat and bringing my experience to bear.

“RedCat has had a strong start and has grown phenomenally quickly, and I’m looking forward to working with Rooney and the team to continue the growth momentum.”
