A new JD Wetherspoon (JDW) pub has opened at The O2 today (Tuesday 21 March) after a whopping £2.9m investment.

The Stargazer, located in Peninsula Square in Greenwich, east London, sits within The O2’s Entertainment District. It’s adjacent to Mamma Mia! The Party.

The new venue features a 3,800 sq ft beer garden offering views across the Thames and Canary Wharf.

Pub manager Arber Hasani was “confident” the Stargazer would be a great addition to The O2 Entertainment District.

The Stargazer will create 85 jobs and will open from 10am until 12.15am Monday to Sunday with food being served throughout the day, from opening until 11pm daily.

Expected success

Entertainment District and Icon Outlet at The O2 managing director Janine Constantin-Russell said: “The Stargazer is a fantastic addition to our F&B line- up here at The O2, and JDW’s extensive investment in this space emphasises the importance of our location and the opportunities that we can provide for brands, whether that be independents or household names.

“Following the recent arrival of iFLY indoor skydiving, the Entertainment District is really thriving, and there is no doubt that JDW will add to its continued success.”

The Stargazer pub name, as well as pub design, draws inspiration from its location, and the important role that Greenwich plays in the history of astronomy and navigation.

Astronomer Sir Edmund Halley appointed Astronomer Royal at Greenwich Observatory, established his reputation studying stars.

Published in 1678, his star catalogue was the world’s first and determined hundreds of southern stars’ locations.

Historical design

The pub’s décor features stars reflected in the signage and there are references throughout the interior on sculptures and lighting with the use of copper material representing the rays from the solar system.

Behind the bar, sculptures and artwork are displayed, symbolising astronomy instruments, views and stargazers alongside the Stargazer’s other meanings – a lily and venomous fish.

Its carpet throughout the site also draws inspiration from orbiting stars and planets and the equipment used by astrologers and astronomers.

The O2 is located just 15 minutes from central London, and is accessible by road, tube and boat. Spanning more than 800,000 sq ft, the O2 has been visited by more than 100 million people since opening in 2007 and plays host to more than 300 events a year.
