Admiral Taverns has ramped up its recruitment of business development managers (BDM) with a proven track record to supplement its existing core.

The tenanted pubco, led by chairman Jonthan Paveley and managing director Kevin Georgel, has reworked its approach and strategy on BDMs, giving them more power and flexibility to make key decisions.

It has recently recruited Steve Head, a former finalist in the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) Operations Managers of the Year Award, from Greene King, as well as Michael Bridger and Becky Whitlock-Torr, two former Punch BDMs of the year — Georgel's old company. Others to join include another ALMR Ops Award finalist in Wayne Billyeald and Collette Phillips formerly of Enterprise Inns and Estuary Taverns.

Georgel said his company had been successful in recruiting top BDMs for various reasons. "Firstly, we genuinely empower our BDMs — they are given the autonomy and freedom to make decisions. Secondly, it speaks about the momentum developing at Admiral — there is a speed and energy, which I think people can see and are buying into, coupled with a trading picture that is strong and improving all the time.

"Thirdly, we are drawing up a significant capital expenditure programme, which will serve to help our licensees and BDMS drive their businesses forward."
