Lincoln MP gets behind the bar

Lincoln MP Karl McCartney completed a shift at the Cloud Bar in Lincoln to get a greater understanding of the pub trade, working behind the bar, serving food and learning the ropes as a cellarman.

He is one of the 40 MPs who have agreed to work behind the bar in support of the trade. The initiative, set up by All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group chairman Andrew Griffiths, aims to help MPs understand the pressures faced by hosts.

McCartney said: “Working the shift gave me the opportunity to talk to Michael Kheng, owner of the Cloud Bar, and his staff and customers about their concerns for the future of the industry. It is clear that tackling unnecessary and burdensome red tape, or bureaucracy, must be a priority for the Government. The Great British pub is at the heart of communities and, as MP for Lincoln, I will do my best to ensure it remains the case in our city and surrounding areas.”

Kheng added: “McCartney is one of the more proactive MPs, and he was happy to have a good chat.

“The more MPs we get behind the trade the better it will help to limit the rubbish going through Parliament.”
