Licensee fined over short measures

Janet Coser, owner of Irish-themed O’Gradys in Redcar, North Yorkshire, was charged after Trading Standards visited her premises in August last year and were served 41.2ml and 43.6ml of Captain Morgan White Rum despite paying for 50ml, according to Gazette Live​.

The officers used measuring cylinders while at the pub to check the drinks, and investigations were then launched.

Lesser quantity of goods

Coser pleaded guilty at Teeside Magistrates' Court and was charged with “delivering a lesser quantity of goods than that purported to have been sold”.

While the charge carries a penalty of up to £5,000, Coser was given a £200 fine with a £20 charge and the court did not award costs.

Reminder

Following the case, cabinet member for health and housing at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Lynn Pallister, said: “This should be a reminder to other licensed premises in Redcar and Cleveland that they have a responsibility to ensure they follow the weights and measures legislation.

“This includes making sure that members of staff are sufficiently trained and have the correct knowledge and that management adequately monitors the standards expected of their staff,” according to the newspaper.
