A licensee has removed a sign advertising “German porn” at a Shrewsbury pub after complaints led to a visit from police and environmental health.

Police asked the Monkmoor pub, in Shropshire, to remove the sign - which was supposed to be “light hearted”.

On its Facebook page the pub posted: “I think some people should get a sense of humour, but very sorry for any offense caused.”

The sign read: "BT Sport, Sky Sports, German porn."

The Monkmoor said it removed the sign because of “multiple complaints resulting in a visit from the police and environmental health”.

Locals defend pub

Locals were quick to defend the Monkmoor.

Roseina Marsh said: “I wondered why the police were there today lol. Thought the sign was funny myself lol.”

Amber-Paige Jones said “some sad people about”, and Nath Truj Smout added “jokers can't take jokes”.

West Mercia Police said there are conditions on the pub's licence which states they cannot have certain types of entertainment at the premises.

Insp Graham Preece said: “We made contact with the licensee who reassured us it was light-hearted and no offence was intended. The premises have now removed the sign."

A Shrewsbury town councillor reported the sign to police after being told about it by a member of the public.

Advertising signs can be of great benefit to licensees, as well as controversial.

In July Isle of Wight licensee Mick Quinn, leaseholder at the Fleming Arms, hailed the impact of his controversial advertising boards in significantly boosting trade — despite public complaints to police.

Hampshire Police received complaints about a sign that read: "Fat people are harder to kidnap. Stay safe, eat lots here", but Quinn decided to keep the board.
