A Bristol pub has laid down the gastronomic gauntlet for its customers with the launch of a gut-busting eating challenge.

The mammoth meal at the Ashville pub features a 72oz (2kg) steak, triple-cooked chips, mushrooms, tomatoes, salad, vegetables, garlic toast and onion rings and is topped with peppercorn and Béarnaise sauce.

The challenge costs a whopping £82.95 to take on, but is free for those who can finish it in an hour with a pint of lager or cider.

One challenger

Only one customer has taken up the challenge so far but was beaten by the colossal feast.

Unbeatable

Earlier this year, Leicester pub the Gravity, Hinckley, created an "unbeatable", 3,500-calorie Christmas burger challenge.

The burger contained a 900g patty, more than 1kg of chilli con carne, three chicken breasts, four rashers of bacon, four hash browns, cheese and a 400g bun.

In December of last year, Stockton-on-Tees pub the George claimed to have broken the world record for biggest Christmas dinner.

Owner Craig Harker’s take on the festive meal cost £70 and consisted of a 5lb turkey crown, 2lbs of mashed potatoes, 1lb of turnip and swede mash, 30 sprouts, 30 broccoli florets, 15 cauliflower florets, 40 carrots, 35 parsnips, 25 roast potatoes and 30 balls of stuffing.

The Gravity in Hinckley also created a Christmas dinner challenge that, although far smaller than the George’s, still contained more than 15 times the recommended daily amount of fat and salt.
