The former managing director and chairman of Scottish & Newcastle Retail has joined one of the UK's top restaurant groups.

Ian Hannah has become a non-executive director of City Centre Restaurants, which owns Garfunkels, Frankie and Benny's, Caffe Uno, Est Est Est, Wok Wok, Chiquito's and Deep Pan Pizza.

He joins non-executive chairman Alan Jackson who took over in March after a career at Whitbread and Inn Business Group.

Mr Hannah joined Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) in 1979 and held various positions within the group including chairman of Newcastle Breweries, William Younger and Thistle Hotels.

He became managing director and chairman of S&N Retail and in 1988 was appointed to the S&N board. He retired early this year.

During his time at S&N, he was involved in the creation of the retail division and instrumental in the acquisition of Chef and Brewer in 1994 from Grand Metropolitan. In 1999 he was heavily involved in acquiring the Greenalls pub estate.

S&N Retail has subsequently become a leading pub caterer in the UK with such brands as Chef and Brewer and Bar 38.

Mr Jackson said: "Ian has much relevant experience that can be applied to our business. We look forward to the contribution that he will make to both the group and the board."
