Exclusive pub-goers survey revealed at Publican Conference 2001

A major new piece of research into consumer trends and attitudes towards pubs will be revealed exclusively to delegates at The Publican Conference 2001.

The Publican Newspaper in partnership with Britvic Soft Drinks has commissioned the independent research to find out pub-goers' likes and dislikes, in order to provide delegates with comprehensive data to help plan and take their businesses forward.

Importantly, the research aims to discover why 52 per cent of the population don't go to or rarely go to pubs at all. A section of the research has been set aside to find out what these people are doing with their free time and where they are spending their cash instead.

The research deliberately steers away from usual run-of-the-mill consumer questions and rather than simply highlighting whether clean toilets or price are the major factors in choosing a pub, goes into much more depth to provide a robust and accountable piece of data.

Attitudes to venue, drinks and food along with their views and knowledge on important industry issues will form the basis of the research which will be directly compared with The Publican's annual Market Report research into publicans' opinions and trends. The findings of this new piece of research will be under wraps until November 1, when it will be presented jointly by The Publican Newspaper and Britvic Soft Drinks, offering delegates the opportunity to voice their comments and feedback.

A distinguished panel of industry leaders will also offer their own comment and opinion on whether the trade has cracked it or whether it's falling short of consumer needs.

The panel will include:

  • Tim Martin, chairman, JD Wetherspoon
  • Simon Emeny, retail director, Fuller Smith & Turner
  • Ian Payne, chief executive, Morgan Grenfell's pub estate.
  • Amanda Willmott, managing director, Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen

Other confirmed speakers include:

  • Robert Breare, chairman of Noble House Leisure, who will be speaking on "Dealing with a Deal".
  • John Murphy, chairman of St Peter's Brewery, who will using his wide experience in the world of branding to talk about brand values
  • Justin Worsely, Associate Director at consumer research company The Henley Centre, will deliver a thought-provoking speech on new technology
  • Matthew Nayler, analyst from Williams de Broe presents an industry overview highlighting the movers and shakers
  • Mark Borkowski, a PR guru who knows a thing or two about gaining good and bad publicity gives some tips on dealing with the press.

The conference, held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in the heart of Westminster is a must-attend event for pub retailers and brewers.
