Scottish & Newcastle sold 456 of its leased pubs to Royal Bank of Scotland in a £260m cash deal in October. The deal was the third block-sale of leased pubs to RBS over the last two years, and brought the number of its pubs sold to the bank to 1,075.

Pubmaster fails to buy W&DB

August saw Pubmaster fail in its attempt to buy Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries (W&DB). W&DB shareholders ended the year-long battle for the brewer, which owns brands including Marston's and Banks's as well as the Pitcher & Piano chain of bars, by rejecting Pubmaster's cash offer.
