British brewers have mounted a push to increase beer sales in the US, with a tasting at the British Consulate General in New York.

The US is the biggest export market for British beer, with more than one million barrels being shipped there each year. It is hoped this initiative will help grow the market further.

The tasting, for retailers, wholesalers and the media, was the result of a collaboration between British Beer Exports, TradePartners UK and the British Consulate General.

John James, export manager for Bedford brewer Charles Wells and chairman of British Beer Exports, said: "Brewers large and small are successfully working together to develop export markets for British beers in America.

"Through company co-operation, competitive markets for British beers are opening up in America.

"The tastings help grow a market, which is a major benefit to all exporters, and they give support to companies that are new to the market and establish links with potential importers and retailers.

"Americans want to know about our different beer styles. Many visitors to the UK love visiting the British pub and want to try the beers they enjoyed on holiday or a business trip in their own country.

"We are passionate about beer and by working together we can make the US market grow."

Other brewers taking part in the trade mission to the US include: Belhaven Brewery, WH Brakspear, Federation Brewery, Fuller, Smith & Turner, George Gale, Greene King, Harvey & Son, Hook Norton, JW Lees, Frederic Robinson, Scottish & Newcastle, St Peter's Brewery and Wychwood Brewery.
