The Sunday papers were dominated this week, for obvious reasons, by England's 3-0 victory over Denmark in the World Cup on Saturday.

Coverage in most of the newspapers included pictures of fans celebrating in pubs across the country during what is likely to be the trade's biggest weekend of the year.

The Sunday Times reported there was little or no violence following the victory despite the millions who spent the day in the pub.

The article said an estimated 35,000 pubs were showing the match and the British Beer and Pub Association estimated that the industry stood to make upwards of £50m extra on a normal Saturday's trading.

Although thin on the ground, other news included a Mail on Sunday report that pub operator Laurel is dropping plans to securitise its estate to raise extra cash and may instead float the company on the stock market next year. The Mail reported that chief executive Ian Payne was looking to boost the size of the Laurel estate, which is currently around 600 outlets, before the float.

The Independent on Sunday included a report on advertisers who have been capitalising on the World Cup. The article highlighted Anheuser-Busch and Coca-Cola as two of only a handful of sponsors whose shares remain strong. Other sponsors, including dotcom advertising firm Yahoo! and electronics giant Toshiba, have seen share price dive since the start of the year.

In its supplement, the Independent features an article on the Bruichladdich distillery on the Island of Islay in Scotland which reopened last year after being closed since 1994.

The Sunday Times includes articles on both the top and bottom ends of the hotel business, with news of plans for the UK's first six star hotel, which will cost around £1,000 per night. It also had news of plans for Easydorms - budget backpackers hotels which are the brainchild of Easyjet founder Stelios Haji-Iannou.

There is also a piece in the Times on Irish drinks firm C&C Group which is preparing for its £900m flotation. Its brands include Tullamore Dew whiskey as well as Irish Bulmers Cider (not to be confused with HP Bulmers in Britain).

The Sunday Express had little industry news except for a piece on licensee Barbara Grubb of the Crown Inn at Farnham in Surrey who aims to win the Farnham In Bloom gardening contest with an unusual pub display. This includes an abandoned Ford Fiesta in the carpark that has been filled with earth and turned into a giant flower bed.
