Daniel Thwaites is slapping its thighs in anticipation of a new lager launched in conjunction with a Bavarian prince.

The North West brewer has joined forces with the Kaltenberg brewery, owned for more than 700 years by the family of Prince Luitpold, to introduce Kaltenberg into the UK standard lager sector.

Kaltenberg, which is not the Kaltenberg Pils once handled by Whitbread, will be brewed in Lancashire under the strict Bavarian purity laws and will be available to the trade later this month.

The addition of Kaltenberg, 3.8 per cent ABV, to the Daniel Thwaites portfolio follows the success of Warsteiner, a premium German lager that has established a healthy following since being taken on in 1998, and is now a 22,500-barrel brand.

Paul Winter, sales and marketing director for Thwaites, said: "We are reinforcing our commitment to brewing and providing all our customers with a superb range of products.

"As globalisation in the brewing industry continues, I know there will be a place for forward thinking regionals with strong brands. The addition of Kaltenberg means whatever sector of draught market may grow in the future we have products within that sector to meet the challenge."

Brian Jenkins, freetrade sales manager for Thwaites, dismissed suggestions that the bottom had fallen out of the standard lager sector.

"We think that standard lager has a very important role to play. Standard lager in the North West is a huge part of our business and is still in growth and we wanted a brand that is more influential. In Kaltenberg, we feel that we have that brand."
