Wetherspoon's latest cut-price drinks promotion blasted
Pub group JD Wetherspoon has been slated following its latest cut-price drinks promotion.Bill Sharp, of the Guild of Master Victuallers, has accused Wetherspoon of encouraging binge-drinking and forcing hardship on licensees with its new promotion in which it will cut prices on eight products to undercut supermarket Sainsbury's. He said: "Normal licensees can't compete. To cut the product price is ridiculous."Wetherspoon says it is trying to encourage people to use their local pub by cutting prices. The new Christmas promotion will run from next Monday (November 11) until the beginning of January and will see a pint of Guinness sold for £1.69 compared to Sainsbury's price of £1.85 and Red Square sold for 10p less than the supermarket's price of £1.39.Eddie Gershon, spokesman for Wetherspoon, said: "We are encouraging people to come to pubs rather than buy drink from a supermarket."JD Wetherspoon Christmas promotion:
