"Behave or be banned" is the stark message being sent out to drunken yobs in a Lancashire town.

Licensees and police in Poulton-le-Fyde, near Blackpool, are warning troublemakers to behave or face a potential ban for life in the town's many bars, restaurants and clubs after a rise in drink-related crime in the area.

Anyone arrested by police for causing damage, violence or rowdy behaviour will be banned from not only all licensed premises, but also from using local taxis.

Paul Mellor, licensee of the Hub nightclub and Cube café bar in the town, hopes it will make Poulton one of the safest places in the country to enjoy a night out.

"By joining forces with other licensees we are able to implement a zero tolerance scheme which will ensure that the town remains a vibrant, enjoyable and safe night out," he said.

Inspector Debicki, of Lancashire Constabulary, agreed. He said, "This is an important initiative, which we hope will be used as a pilot for other towns across the county."

This is the latest in a long line of Pubwatch schemes established so that licensees and the police can work together to keep out troublemakers. Anyone who is looking to set up their own scheme should contact the National Pubwatch, the organisation that helps to set up local schemes with licensees and police and issues information on best practice for licensees, on 01707 650095.
