WKD has had its knuckles rapped by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) after viewers complained one of its adverts was homophobic, offensive and "encouraged the acceptance of anti-gay behaviour".

The advert, which shows a group of male friends in a locker room tricking a team mate into standing in an effeminate way - hand on hip - and taunting him with cries of "ooh hello sailor", has been banned by the ITC despite protests from owner Beverage Brands.

A statement from the company said: "The advert is intended to be amusing and is certainly not intended to offend anyone, least of all those in the gay community who drink our products on a regular basis.

"Beverage Brands is totally committed to a non-discriminatory advertising policy and actively supports events and campaigns related to a large number of social groups including the gay and lesbian communities, who we know form a healthy proportion of our drinkers."

The ITC said the advert was reminiscent of playground bullying and has threatened sanctions against the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) unless the advert is suspended or amended.
