Jonathan and Victoria Lee of the Red Lion, Ealing, have won Fuller's Griffin Trophy, which is awarded to the company's best pub. The Griffin Trophy is an annual competition run by Fuller's across its managed and tenanted pubs. Judges examine the appearance of pubs, the quality of the ales and cellar, food, involvement in the community and the entrants' commitment and enthusiasm. The winners of the overall prize received a £3,000 holiday voucher, £500 to spend on their staff, a plaque for the pub and the trophy itself. Other winners were: best town/local pub, Tom Foolery, Bromley (manager Sue Hayden); best country/village pub, the Greyfriar, Chawton (lessees Peter and Frances Whitehead); best city pub, the Victoria, Paddington (managers Chris Cochran and Helen Wilson), runner-up, Red Herring, EC2 (manager Mark Yeo); Best newcomer pub, Gibraltar Castle (lessees Hamish Miller and Sally Powell).
